Introduction to Arcaro Couture
” Angelina Arcaro” – A brief back ground
I knew since I was in Primary School that I wanted to be a Fashion Designer when I grew up. By age 11 I was designing my own clothes and running them up with curtain material on mum’s old treadle sewing machine. Growing up in an era when most “good little Italian girls” went on to become secretaries, teachers or hairdressers. My parents were somewhat dismayed when I enrolled in 3years for a Diploma in Fashion Design, much to their résistance.
I qualified in 1975 with the ‘Most Consistent Student ‘award to boot. And so my long career began. For the last 40 years I have not been away from the clothing industry for any lengthy time. I’ve worked in many different areas of fashion from Designer/ patternmaker, fashion sales, Stylist, workroom manager, freelance designing, teaching, and mentoring other designers.
One of my proud achievements was holding my first fashion show at the Concert Hall Tavern at the age of 23.This received with much media coverage. Another was developing a course in Clothing Workroom Practices in the 80s, which was picked up and run by CYSS (Centrelink). I trained interested people such as numerous Vietnamese and Cambodian boat people in workroom skills 3days per week. What a rewarding experience this was.
With my love of designing clothing for some of Perth’s elite, I decided to specialise in Evening Gowns and started my business in 2003. I filled my shop with Bridal and Evening Gowns all designed and made by myself of the highest quality materials and standards.
After 8years of hard and rewarding work I found I was unable to keep up with the demand of keeping the shop stocked with original designs as well as designing and creating gowns for my clientele, I therefore decided to sell the shop and work from home studio, but still creating exclusive gowns for Brides, the maids, Mother of the Brides/groom and also evening gowns for formals.
There is nothing more rewarding than doing my final ritual of taking the finished product to my client’s car with them smiling all the way and being given the biggest hug ever for fulfilling their dream. How lucky am I to have a job that I love! Arcaro Couture is about designing and constructing individual gowns for stylish women in particular filling the gap for the ladies who have difficulty gaining a gown that will fit their body property. That is, for someone extra tall or short, big busted, large hips etc. In other words – someone that is not the standard measurements of readymade. I also love to work with older brides who want to look elegant but not typically bridal also mothers of brides/grooms and the excitable 17 year old’s evening gowns for their formals.
